The word theocracy comes from the Ancient Greek θεοκρατία (theocratia), meaning 'the rule of God', from θεός (theos) 'god' and κρατέω (krateo) 'to rule'. Flavius Josephus first used the term in the first century AD to describe the Jewish polity, which he considered distinct from monarchy, oligarchy, and democracy. Josephus' definition was widely accepted until the Enlightenment, when the term took on negative connotations.
